Families in Rivers community complain of land grabbing

Over 700 families in Ogoniland are angry with the Rivers State government over what they allege was a forceful land acquisition by the state Ministry of Agriculture.

Consequently, the families, under the Ogoni Solidarity Forum and Ogoni Civil Society Platform have joined forces with two non-governmental organisations - the Social and Economic Rights Action Centre (SERAC) and Social Action (SA) - to show their displeasure and concern over what they described as the “grave human rights and due process breaches” by the Rivers State government. Ogoni people call for justice 14 years after Ken Saro-Wiwa

A group of Ogoni indigenes have called on the Federal Government to prosecute all members of the late Sani Abacha junta that constituted the Provisional Ruling Council, which ratified the killing of the Ogoni nine, and also quash the conviction of Ken Saro-Wiwa, the late Ogoni activist.

This call was made by Celestine Akpobari, the National Coordinator of the Ogoni Solidarity Forum, on Saturday during a press briefing to commemorate the 14th anniversary of the killing of Mr. Saro Wiwa and eight other Ogonis at the Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth International office in Lagos.

In November 1995, Mr. Saro-Wiwa and eight other Ogonis were executed by the military government of Mr. Abacha for masterminding the death of four Ogoni chiefs. "At this 14th anniversary, we are looking at the issues that Ken fought for. What was the Ogoni struggle all about? Was it just a suicide mission to send our best people to their early graves?" asked Mr. Akpobari. Read The Full Story

Nigerian Secret Police Detains Ogoni Activist , Celestine Akpobari

Celestine AkpobariTwo stern-looking heavily armed operatives of the State Security Services (SSS) of Nigeria’s notorious secret police about 3.30pm (Nigerian Time) today stormed the conference hall of Social Action (SA), a nongovernmental organization in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State where a press conference addressed by officials of the Ogoni Civil Society Platform(OCSP) was taking place. The state secret police issued an invitation request to Mr. Celestine Akpobari, a prominent Ogoni activist  and one of the leaders of OCSP, to see them in their office.

The  press briefing had addressed the  massive land grabbing by the Rivers State Government  led by Governor Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, the United Nations Environmental Program(UNEP)  and oil exploration resumption plans in the Ogoniland.
