UNEP REPORT

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) was contracted by the government of Nigeria in 2007 to conduct an independent assessment of the environmental and public health impacts of hydrocarbon contamination in Ogoniland, and to furthermore recommend options for remediation. The assessment, released in August 2011, concluded that “the environmental restoration of Ogoniland could prove to be the world’s most wide ranging and long term oil clean up exercise undertaken if contaminated drinking water, land, creeks and important ecosystems such as mangroves are to be brought back to full health”
